Before training: I worked as a jeweller and model maker with my father in our family workshop. I studied jewellery production technology and equipment at a technical university. I came to the school on recommendations: I spoke with people who had trained here and taken many courses, and I saw the quality of their work.

After the course: I use the setting skills in the workshop - it has expanded both my capabilities and my client base. The most valuable part: the attitude to work, the working principles, the sequence of operations.

Path and timing
My technical education and the family workshop were the foundation. Now comes the consolidation phase: reflection, experiments, discipline without haste.

Before training: I studied fine art, specialising in printmaking and sculpture. Since 2008 I have been designing jewellery: I started with hand sketches, then moved on to 3D models. I had been following the school on Instagram, and when the Dubai courses were announced I saw my chance to begin.

After the course: The course lasts a week and is packed with information. Practice and going on to the advanced courses afterwards are essential.

Path and timing
After Dubai I came to study in St. Petersburg. I took several courses: hot enamel painting, gemstone engraving, wax carving and metal engraving. Each of them enriched my approach to designing and making jewellery.

Result
I am preparing a jewellery collection in painted enamel and intaglio.

Roman Karakurkchi

The founder of International Jewellery School and the instructor of different courses on engraving and stone setting. Roman started to learn goldsmiths skills at the age of 13, after, have gotten a higher art education, and then successfully mastered the profession of a jewellery technologist. More than 10 years he was engaged in optimization of jewellery production processes. In 2014 he opened International Jewellery School - the first school of its kind in Russia, inviting the leading masters from Europe and the USA. In 2016 he finished successfully course classical Italian engraving and Bulino at the famous Italian school Le Arti Orafe Jewellery School & Academy. In 2017 he took part at the Grand Master’s program of the famous American jewellery school GRS Training Center (Emporia, USA). Learn more

Igor Dementsov

International Jewellery School instructor, engraver - by life's calling. He got into engraving in 2019. As he says himself, "I just wanted to give an original look to my motorbike". Self-study of information allowed to perform the first steps in this profession. Further there was a period of searching, trial and error. During this period, the desire to "just decorate a motorbike" grew into a desire to engage in engraving.
In 2021 he passed his qualification at our centre. Since March 2024 he has been a current employee of the company as an engraver.

Today Igor is engaged in the most complex, exclusive projects, constantly honing his skills and developing in this profession. He also runs a practical course for beginners and students, which will help them to master the basic skills of "hand placement" and familiarise themselves with GRS equipment.

Vladimir Popovich

Vladimir Popovich: Fr om Geology to Stone Art

Born in 1962 in Michurinsk, Vladimir Popovich began studying art at age 10 under Arkady Plotitsyn, who taught him to "see the world." Despite his artistic inclinations, he became a geologist (Geological Prospecting Institute) and worked in Kazakhstan (uranium, gold), wh ere he discovered stone carving in Stepnogorsk.

Initially treating stones as raw ore, he gradually became fascinated by their beauty. Starting with cabochons, he mastered engraving techniques after receiving a drill from a friend. Inspired by ancient intaglios (like Dexamenos of Chios' "Heron") and Renaissance crystal carvings, he began creating miniature artworks on topaz, beryl, and even diamond.

He trained at the "Vikart" workshop (V. Kuzmishchev, E. Koroleva), learning micromosaic techniques. His key mentors were V. Malyasov and A. Tenzo. His philosophy: "To reveal the truth hidden within the stone." He compares carving to "building a Gothic cathedral"-demanding patience and vision when working with ultra-hard materials.

Legacy: Popovich transforms stones into "paintings"-from whimsical to profound-bridging science and art through timeless craftsmanship.

For those taking their first steps there is a preparatory course on the GRS pneumatic system with intensive hand-positioning training. For experienced jewellers there is the professional stone setters' programme covering all the main setting types. And even highly specialised signature courses, such as high-polish engraving, run once or twice a year and are open to beginners and experienced specialists alike.

Who can study at International Jewellery School?

The school is open to everyone, regardless of age, education or experience. We work with a wide range of students:

Complete beginners - people who have never held a jeweller's tool but want to learn the profession from scratch. For them we run a preparatory course on the pneumatic graver: in 5 days it lays the foundation - correct posture, hand positioning, working under the microscope and the first metal-carving skills. After this course a student can already try their hand at simple work.
Aspiring jewellers and students of specialist universities #ИМЯ?
Practising masters with experience - jewellers, engravers and stone setters who work in workshops or run their own brands. They come for new techniques (such as high-polish engraving), to deepen their stone-setting knowledge, and for the chance to work on world-class equipment not found in ordinary workshops.
Professionals from related fields - designers, sculptors, restorers and watchmakers who need jewellery skills to broaden their competencies or create original signature pieces.
International students - the school welcomes students from any country. Classes can be taught in English, and the cultural programme makes the training an enriching journey as well.

What training directions are available?

The school's programmes fall into three main directions:

Direction 1. Stone setting
A fundamental jewellery specialisation, in demand at any production facility.
Direction 2. Engraving
Engraving is the art of creating designs and patterns on metal. The school teaches techniques from basic to highly specialised.
Direction 3. Jewellery techniques
This direction brings together highly specialised signature courses taught by guest masters from Russia and Europe. All programmes are aimed at a professional level and run in English and Russian.

What equipment is used for training?

Training is conducted on professional GRS equipment - the world leader in jewellery production technology. The school's studios are fully equipped: ergonomic benches, orthopaedic chairs, professional optics and hand tools.

What format do the classes take?

Training takes place in person in St. Petersburg, and twice a year in Dubai and Lisbon. Students can practise outside class hours - arriving earlier and staying later. Classes are led by the school's senior instructors, and courses are available in Russian and English.
